Long Hair, Don’t Care

2020-Ongoing

A self-portraiture project exploring the female body as a rejection of the objectifying gaze that uses domestic objects and playful performative acts. Props, colour, and costume in the constructed setups create an idea of how the female body is viewed by society and the stereotypes and expectations tied to being a woman. Inspired by performance art, the project challenges the objectifying gaze by hiding parts of the face with hair and engaging the viewer with an awkward and confrontational gaze of the woman, while non-submissive, everyday tasks and acts are performed. The pose and gaze give back control to the female subject over their body and self. Hiding the face using hair as a statement, makes the anonymity of the subject more intriguing and removes the identity of the woman, as hair is another key aspect of female identity and links to the power that they have over their own bodies.
