Guest Speaker 11: Rachel Brown (Part 1)
“A Journey through image-making”
Rachel Brown is a photographer and photo director for Harper’s Bazaar. Her personal work reflects on how the world is a stage and it is what drives her.
I find her work so enticing and the way she talks about her work is interesting. She seduces viewers with colours in her work.
She mentioned how in one of her projects “Simulations” one of the photos was rejected by a gallery, but she eventually got it shown in another one at Photo London, “women in photography”. She showed femininity in different ways.
Aside from her own work, she told us about different artist residencies and where to look for them, she did a few early on in her career to explore different places. Palm Beach, Florida is one of them: “Simulations” series shows a go-to destination for escapism and how society creates imagination.
Even though her practice isn’t the style of my own, I found her talk interesting and the journey of her career is inspiring. I may look into artist residencies as she mentioned in this talk, as they are a good opportunity to explore and experience new places while creating work. Also, when she’s stuck she said she played a sound bath which is a form of meditation; I tried this technique after this talk as I was in a creative block and it worked slightly to help ideas flow.
